NVMe

With the increasing need for more performance and bandwidth within enterprise applications, customers have looked towards PCIe interface add-in solutions. In some cases, though, they have experienced driver issues or have had server downtime as the cards are installed.

Enter NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory express): a new industry-wide standard interface for PCIe where SSDs become ‘hot swappable’, ie, they can be removed and replaced while the server remains active. It also allows functions to be performed five times faster (a limitation of SAS and SATA is bandwidth, so limiting the speed with which functions are executed). The NVMe standard is being driven by an industry-wide consortium currently comprising 100 members.
